Where to get Information - Owner Builder Club

Where to Find Reliable Owner Builder Information

There’s no shortage of advice online.

The challenge isn’t finding information, it’s knowing what’s accurate, current and relevant to your state.

Owner building involves legislation, compliance and financial risk. Getting the wrong advice can cost time, money and momentum.

Here’s how to gather information properly.

Start With Your Local Council

We highly, highly recommend that you first make contact with your local Council planning department.

This is your opportunity to ask as many questions as you can while you have someone on the phone.

Open the conversation with: “I’d like to understand all Council requirements and approvals for becoming an owner builder.”

Take notes.

If they can’t answer something, ask who can.

Keep the person’s name and if you’re cheeky enough, their direct number, in case you need help down the track.

This early conversation can save you significant time later.

State Government Resources

For state-specific requirements, training rules and permit applications, always refer directly to your state authority.

Important: Government websites explain legislation and requirements but they don’t guide you through the practical sequencing of your build.

Understanding the rules is one thing. Knowing how to manage the process is another.

Industry Bodies and Professional Associations

Organisations such as Master Builders Australia and Housing Industry Association (HIA) can provide general guidance, industry standards and contract templates.

Just remember, these bodies primarily represent registered builders. Their content isn’t always written specifically for owner builders.

Converse With People in the Know

Yes, it takes time. But on the weekend, grab a decent coffee and visit your local:

  • Hardware store
  • Kitchen showroom
  • Bathroom retailer
  • Tile supplier

Talk to people. Ask questions. Gather insight.

This is research and it builds confidence.

You’ve already started by speaking to your council. Now broaden the conversation.

Online Communities

Forums and social media groups can provide real-life experiences but advice can be outdated or apply to a different state.

If you want to connect with other owner builders in a structured environment, join our private Facebook community where over 14,000 members share experiences and ask practical questions.

Move from Research to Structure

Information is powerful but scattered information creates overwhelm.

Owner building isn’t just about knowing the rules. It’s about understanding how budgeting, approvals, insurance, contracts and construction all connect.

If you’re ready to see the bigger picture and understand how the pieces fit together:

Run your build with clarity and confidence using our stage-by-stage system. Know what to do, when to do it and how to avoid expensive mistakes. Built with registered builders for serious owner builders who want control not chaos.

Before you commit time and money, make sure it’s the right decision for your finances, risk tolerance and lifestyle. A short, practical course to help you decide with confidence.

Set your project up properly before construction begins. Organise approvals, budgeting and documentation so you don’t create costly delays later.
